Extending from the southern U.S. the Baja peninsula borders the Pacific Ocean on the west, and the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez) on the east. Around the southern tip or horn of the peninsula is the Los Cabos region. Find bird sanctuaries, the Cabo Pulmo National Park marine reserve and Land’s End, where the iconic “El Arco” rock formation marks the confluence of the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez. Actively cruise between La Paz and Loreto aboard the 8-guest adventure yacht Westward, stopping at remote islands and beaches for hiking, kayaking and snorkeling. Venture to premier sites along Baja's Sea of Cortez for up-close encounters with gray whales and snorkeling alongside whale sharks. Grab a mask and fins and make your way around vibrant coral reefs, where you’ll find colorful fish and manta rays.

Sea of Cortez – Peak Dive Season

A staple of the Sonoran cuisine popular in northern Mexico, machaca guisada is a stew that spotlights spiced beef or donkey. The meet is dried like jerky, pounded and simmered in spiced liquid until it’s tender again.

A romantic, awe-inspiring lagoon awaits after navigating a natural rock cavern. Experience the country’s unique character the second you step on the ship with traditional Mexican cuisine, events and activities. On a Sea of Cortez cruise with Princess, discover culture around every corner. Take a photo in front of the iconic Arch of Cabo San Lucas, the beach town’s most famous landmark. This distinctive rock formation juts out of the water and reaches almost three stories high. Aside from being a popular photographic background, this natural attraction also marks the spot where the Pacific Ocean merges with the Sea of Cortez.

Cruise Ship

Cruising is about so much more than the time you spend at sea, particularly when you stop along Mexico's treasure-filled Pacific Coast. Imagine beautiful warm water and calm seas teaming with life. Schools of skipjacks, mobulas, cow nose rays and turtles. Fish big and small all the way down to delightful seahorses. Water temp rising to high 80’s by September and visibility as gin clear as your bathtub.

Onboard Activities

Baja small ship cruises make it all possible with comfort and ease. Board a pirate ship and sail along the coast to learn about the Riviera’s rich history. Snorkel through the turquoise waters alongside your guide, who can bring you up close to coral reefs and colorful marine life. Or horseback ride along the sun-kissed shores while admiring the beauty and wildlife around you. See the city by land and sea on a cruise to Cabo with Princess.

Meet the personalities that call these lands home on shore excursions exclusive to Princess when you cruise to Mexico. Learn about the traditions of the Aztec people during a tequila tasting with a local Puerto Vallarta restaurateur. Or meet one of Mazatlan’s most famous chefs, Diego Becerra, and spend the afternoon in his seafood bar, Compañia Minera. From a private beach getaway at Las Caletas in Puerto Vallarta to salsa-making in Cabo, find expertly crafted shore excursions suited for any guest when you cruise to Mexico. In Mazatlan, tour one of the country’s most popular breweries. Swim alongside the largest fish in the ocean, the whale shark, while in La Paz.

I know that may be hard to realize, seeing as the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula is home to the famous resort towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Fried tortillas take a swim in spicy red salsa or refreshing green salsa for a savory dish commonly enjoyed during breakfast. There's a more lax attitude about time in Mexico so factor in an extra half-hour to an hour when planning out your Mexico cruise itineraries. You can get a glimpse of the country's most renowned artist, Frida Kahlo, at the Frida Kahlo Museum in Playa del Carmen. It's easy to get in touch with Mother Nature when you're in Mexico. Tours take you through cenotes, expansive underground caverns, or on rainforest safaris where you can spot iguanas, macaws and other colorful wildlife.

Sunny Los Angeles serves as your jumping off point for unforgettable west-coast wanders to the Mexican Riviera. If you’re new to California’s pulsing heart, spend some time exploring its cosmopolitan food scene, star-studded haunts and unique neighborhoods — each with its own distinct vibe. Mexico’s Pacific side offers plenty for outdoor enthusiasts. In fact, most of the best things to do in this beautiful region happen outside.

The UnCruise itinerary does not include any activities to see the whale sharks in the Sea of Cortez. If you plan to arrive a few days before the start of the cruise, you will need to book your own transportation to your hotel in San Jose del Cabo, Los Cabos or book a transfer up to La Paz. They specialize in getting people into destinations and having them experience it with a nature first mentality. In the Sea of Cortez, they are one of less than a handful of ships that sail into the Loreto National Marine Reserve.

Cruise to La Paz and visit a pottery factory, or head downtown to shop for artisan gifts — like hand-crafted jewelry, woven gifts and decorations. Tour a coffee plantation in Puerto Vallarta, and enjoy a prepared lunch on the grounds. Or spend a full day exploring Colima, a short drive from Manzanillo, where 200-year old ruins of the Pyramids of La Campana whisper secrets of times past. When we say that Carnival Miracle takes you to another world, we mean that in every sense.

Read our expert Baja cruise reviews, as well as travel accounts from AdventureSmith travelers. We have swum with whale sharks, seen the gray whales and cruised aboard a variety of ships offering different Baja peninsula and Sea of Cortez small ship cruises. Use our insights to help you plan your perfect trip; this is the ideal way to help you learn more about what to expect aboard a Baja California cruise. Located at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, Cabo is surrounded by clear waters, sun-kissed beaches and the majestic rock formation, El Arco. While it’s one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, El Arco is also a haven for sea lions. On a Cabo cruise, sail by catamaran under the famous arch to see these wildlife, and enjoy an afternoon relaxing on the secluded shores of Lover’s Beach.

Bill does everything possible to make his passengers happy and fulfill their needs and wishes. He aims to please, like the rest of his crew, who treat their passengers as family. There was also a lot of finishing construction being done on one of the staterooms, so there was some dust and smells, and noises. We were all good sports about it, and amazed at the transformations that occurred during our trip.

Setting anchor in the bay, we were offered a variety of activities throughout the day. As a disclaimer, I cannot guarantee that if you take this cruise that you will make these same stops. UnCruise has permits to visit a wide range of islands, bays, and areas within the Sea of Cortez for their cruises.
